The Erie Art Museum is dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the visual arts by building community among artists, art students, and the public. Opportunities abound for artists, including over 130 studio art classes annually, docent trainings, and numerous "call for entries" opportunities including InnovationErie Design Competition and the annual, juried Spring Show.

Check out some of the Museum's public art projects, and check back regularly for ways artists can get involved in the community.

Many people contact the Museum asking how they can get their work displayed here.  Here are some tips:

  • Start building your resume. It is extremely rare for an artist to get a museum exhibit before they have shown their work at galleries.  Most artists selected for a solo show have a long list of gallery shows, have been accepted into a variety of juried shows, and have been active in getting their art in front of the public.
  • Sign up for the Spring Show List. Those on the list receive only one or two emails a year. If you are on this list you will get a prospectus on the Spring Show and sometimes news about other artist opportunities. Contact Sandy to get on this list.
  • Submit to the Spring Show. The Spring Show is the Museum’s annual juried exhibition open to anyone living within 250 miles of Erie. Museum Curator John Vanco does not jury the show, but he sees every piece that is submitted and notices which artists get accepted several years in a row.
  • Be active in your art community. Join one of the artists’ organizations* in your community. Our curator does take note of artists that not only have a strong body of work and have a good resume of showing regionally; he also takes into consideration those artists that are particularly committed to the Erie community.
  • Be prepared to plan way in advance. The Museum typically schedules shows one to three years into the future.

    * The Erie area has two large artist organizations. Presque Isle Artists Association is open to all—you just need to be interested in meeting and exhibiting with other artists. Northwestern Pennsylvania Artists Association memberships are obtained through a jury process—artists are nominated by current members and voted on by the general membership. There is also Lake Erie Fiber Arts Guild, various photography clubs and organizations, and other groups focused on particular art media.
