Painting in Acrylic and Oils: The Lost Sessions

This class is for those who have taken a previous painting course or have had some painting experience. Students paint in a workshop setting to complete projects and receive individualized instruction to maximize the class experience. Students can work for the entire session or come later and/or leave early if that suits their schedule and needs. Materials not included.

Cartooning & Comic Book Drawing
Jude Shingle
Students learn the fundamentals of drawing by creating their own cartoons and comic book characters. Projects include creating comic strips, cartoon characters, working with word balloons, and exaggerating actions. Students of all skill levels can gain from this fun and entertaining class and they are invited to draw according to their interests. Ages 6 –12.

Clay for Kids

Kristen Muscaro
An introduction to clay and the multitude of possibilities it presents as an art form.  The class offers structured projects with lots of room for creativity. Students make cups, pots, and small sculptures with coil and slab methods and get a chance to try the potter’s wheel. Ages 4 and up. Children under 8 must take the class with an adult.

Hula Hoop Making Workshop

Learn how to burn 400 calories an hour with your new personalized hoop! Students create their own properly sized and decorated hoop to take home. Class begins with an overview of the history of “hula hooping” and its influence in the fitness world in addition to its development into a creative movement art form. After hoops are complete, students learn the basic techniques of hooping and a few tricks as well. (Adults are welcome to work with their child to make the hoop for no additional charge). Ages 10 to adults.

Photography Workshop: Street Scenes

Grab your digital camera, put on your walking shoes and join us as we capture the last summer scenes in Erie! Learn about the masters and techniques of street photography from an experienced photographer with guided instruction, discussion and excursions to either Frontier Park or State Street. An additional session for instructor and peer review is suggested for all students on Sunday, August 19.

Textile Dye Workshop

Explore and experiment with a huge variety of fabric decorating techniques including batik (a wax resist process), tie-dye, stamping and more in just a few short hours. The classroom is transformed into a smorgasbord of dying stations allowing participants to get a taste of myriad possibilities without having to purchase any equipment or supplies! Learn from a professional clothing artist who loves giving personalized instruction.

Digital Photography on Clay

Want a new way to show off your photographs? Try firing them onto your own beautiful handmade tiles! Learn to make ceramic tiles and to transfer images using a laser jet printer and decal. Class includes group demonstrations, one-on-one guidance and an introduction to Photoshop. Each student takes home a finished grouted tile tray, rimmed mirror, or other piece of art showcasing your very own photographs! Students can print full color photographs* or black and white. Ages 14 and up.

Beginning Digital Photography

Students cover the basic use of a digital camera: learn how to compose and capture the moment, how to photograph still and moving objects, how to use light, and how to work in low light conditions. Students are introduced to photo editing software. Although a camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal, any digital camera is acceptable for use with this class.

Digital Photography: The Next Step

Students work on developing their own artistic vision and learn to “see” as a photographer, while advancing their technical knowledge. This class presents shooting at twilight and at night, and covers some studio lighting techniques. This class is for those who have completed the Beginning Digital Photo class or already fully understand the features of their camera and photo editing software. A camera that has options beyond automatic settings is advised.

Absolute Beginner: How to Draw

Oriental Painting

Beginning students learn the basics of oriental painting focusing on four paragons: the orchid, the bamboo, the plum, and the chrysanthemum. Intermediate students learn how to paint a few flowers and a variety of fruits. Advanced students learn how to paint trees, rocks, mountains, and waterfalls for landscapes.

Ceramics on the Wheel

Learn how to use the potter’s wheel and create your own unique ceramic ware! For both beginners and those with some experience. Students work with a variety of traditional techniques to create cups, bowls, plates and other vessels. Classes include demos, group exercises, and one-on-one guidance. Students also learn decoration techniques such as carving, stamping, wax resist and will glaze their work. All are given creative freedom and challenged to develop their own personal aesthetic! Exploring Animal Forms

Beginners and intermediate students learn to create animal forms from observation. Explore the unique questions concerning the structure of living creatures and how to replicate those in clay. Classes comprise of demos, working from pictures and objects, and learning how to create sculptural forms. Students are offered a level of freedom in choosing subject matter and surface treatments. Ages 14 to adult.

Wheel Throwing Altered Forms

For intermediate and advanced students with prior wheel throwing experience. Have you ever wanted to know how to make an oval bowl or a square mug? Have you ever thrown a piece on the wheel and felt it was too generic? This class delivers extended wheel and assembly techniques. Learn to create oval, squared, and darted pottery forms such as baking dishes, pitchers, vases, cups and bowls. Classes include demos and lots of one-on-one instruction. Ages 15 to adult.

Clayspace Independent Study

Students gain round-the-clock access to ClaySpace and work independently on their own schedule. This includes use of the wheels, slab roller, extruder, tables, and kilns. Applicants must be knowledgeable in working with clay and studio equipment. Contact the Erie Art Museum for application. Fees start at $50/month for 50 hours or less monthly usage. Independent study students must be Museum members. A one time, refundable security/key deposit of $120 is due at the time of application.

Indian Embroidery and Design

Students learn the basic techniques of Indian embroidery as traditionally used in Indian clothing. Upon completion of the course, each student will have completed a unique square of cloth to take home. Participants will learn techniques such as aari, resham, bead, sequin, coin and zardosi work. In addition to the class hours, practice sessions will be scheduled during the week.

Precious Metals Jewelry Making

Students learn jewelry fabricating and casting techniques (from “beginner basics” to advanced) and learn how to use the traditional hand tools plus in so doing, gain an appreciation of the century old methods of making handcrafted jewelry. The first class is devoted to a slide show and discussion. Each student is briefed on good jewelry design and layout techniques while following an outlined personal “project action plan.” Each student then develops his or her individual project from idea to completion. Tools are supplied for use, but not materials. A list of materials, shop rules and handouts is distributed at the first class.
