First Fridays – a Preschool Program
The first Friday of every month, Museum staff, adults and children explore art right in the galleries with storytelling, art making and music. Cost is $5 per child, free to those with family memberships. Please call 459-5477 to reserve a space.
Art in Action ages 10-14
Looking for something for young artists? The Erie Art Museum offers gallery-based art making sessions. Each week features a new theme.
Hours: Tuesdays beginning June 17 from 3-4:30 p.m.
Fee: $5 weekly per student; all materials are included.
Call the Museum to reserve your space in advance.
Beginning Digital Photography
Art Becker
This class covers both the technical and artistic aspects of taking good pictures. This includes basic camera functions, composition, capturing movement, using light and basic computer photoediting. Each session devotes time to critiquing student work. A camera with interchangeable lenses is ideal, but any digital camera is acceptable

Advanced Digital Photography
Art Becker
Students work on developing their own artistic vision and learn to “see” as a photographer, while advancing their technical knowledge. This class presents shooting at twilight and at night, and covers some studio lighting techniques. Students should already fully understand the features of their camera and photoediting software. A camera that has options beyond automatic settings is advised.

Oriental Painting
Esther Sung A. Hong
Beginning students learn the basics of oriental painting focusing on four paragons: the orchid, the bamboo, the plum, and the chrysanthemum. Intermediate students learn how to paint a few flowers and a variety of fruits. Advanced students learn how to paint trees, rocks, mountains, and waterfalls for landscapes.

Beginning Drawing and Painting

This class introduces basic techniques to adults who have little or no art experience. Students create still lifes, figure drawings, and utilize the art from current exhibits. This class provides a broad exposure to a variety of media such as pencil, conte crayon, watercolor, and acrylic. This class is also appropriate for youth looking for a broadly focused art experience.

New Approaches to Life Drawing

In an open studio setting, students focus on drawing the human form using photos and a live nude model. Students first create quick gestures and work up to longer poses. This class accomodates beginners as well as more experienced artists.

Landscape Painting
Fran Schanz
Students work in their choice of oils or acrylics to hone their present skills and learn new ways of approaching landscapes. The format is fairly loose and the atmosphere congenial and supportive to accomodate beginners as well as advanced painters. In a workshop setting, students work with the instructor and interact with other students, maximizing the class experience. The first session and during inclement weather will be held in the classroom, all other classes will meet at a scenic location.

Watercolor Painting

Using transparent watercolors, students work on location when weather permits and the Annex on rainy days. Instructor gives demonstrations and critiques; emphasizing technique, color, and design. Beginners have the opportunity of working with advanced students in class.

Beaded Jewelry Creation
Yolanda Lorya and Fatima Athow
Learn to make a variety of necklaces and bead figures from two excellent traditional artists. Yolanda and Fatima both learned beading from their mothers in their native Sudan. They are lovely women who teach technique as well as a bit about African culture.

African Dance

A great way to learn about culture, get exercise, and have fun. Many Africans find that it also helps ease back pain. Our instructors grew up in Africa and now are masters in Acholi song and dance. This class is open to complete beginners and seasoned dancers, both men and women, teens and adults.

Framing Basics Workshop

Learn all aspects of basic framing, including layout, cutting mats, and closing techniques. Emphasis is on the importance of using archival materials and methods to preserve your art. Bring one work not exceeding 16” x 20”. The fee covers materials, except frames and glass, which may be ordered. Limit 6.

Sculptural Clay

This class, for all levels, covers a wide range of clay as a sculptural medium. Gesture modeling, clay carving, hand building, simple mold making and wheel throwing are taught in an environment that emphasizes subject matter, content and technique equally. Weekly technical demonstrations and short lectures relevant themes such as form and color supplement the individualized instruction. Ages 15 and up.

Wheel Throwing

In this class students learn to make a variety of vessels on the wheel including; cups, mugs, bowls, plates, goblets, spoon rests, platters, jars, pitchers, casseroles, teapots, colanders, vases, and flower pots. Each week will include a new demonstration and attentive individual instruction. Students also receive instruction on how to glaze their work. Open to all skill levels. Ages 15 and up.

Clay Tiles
Judy Baker
Create up to 10 tiles from low fire clay and finish with acrylic paints. This is
a perfect introduction for beginners or novices wanting to explore different texture treatments. Students will make trivets, wall decorations or house number signs. Ages 14 to adult.

Focus on the Finish

Learn the basics about glazing and firing. Students have the opportunity to make work, test different glaze recipes and combinations, experiment with glaze application, and learn about firing. Depending on student interest, the class will learn to pit fire, raku, electric fire, or high fire. Course designed for students with previous clay experience. Ages 15 to adult.

Clayspace Independent Study

Students gain round-the-clock access to ClaySpace and work independently on their own schedule. This includes use of the wheels, slab roller, extruder, tables, and kilns. Applicants must be knowledgable in working with clay and studio equipment. Contact the Erie Art Museum for application. Fees start at $50/month for 50 hours or less monthly usage. Independent study students must be Museum members. A one time, refundable security/key deposit of $120 is also due at the time of application.
Draw, Paint, Print
Stephanie Campbell
For kids who love art. This class is a chance to experiment with lots of different media and work directly with the art on display in the galleries. Students also learn about some of the formal properties of art (color, line, texture) while they are developing their own artistic vision. This class covers using pencils, pastels, ink, and different kinds of paint. Ages 7 to 11.

African Beadwork for Kids
Yolanda Lorya
Learn how to make bracelets, key rings, chokers, a shekere (African musical instrument) and other cool stuff out of beads. The teacher is a friendly African "grandma" who learned beadwork when she was a child in Sudan. Kids get plenty of guidance and work at their own pace. For ages 9 to 14.

Pottery for Young People
Cara Jung
Youth ages 11-14 learn how to throw cups, bowls, and other vessels on the wheel plus how to build sculptures and other objects. Proper clay handling and glazing is taught in an attentive, creative atmosphere. All students are challenged according to their ability, creating many finished pieces of original work.

Clay for Kids

Children ages 7-11 learn how to make vessels, sculptures and other objects using a variety of techniques. Proper clay handling and glazing is taught. In a nurturing yet structured atmosphere, children freely express themselves, completing many creations.

Clay For Little Ones

Young children ages 4-7 are introduced to clay as an expressive medium, limited only by their imaginations. As clay is soft, responsive to touch and non-toxic, it is versatile and well suited to small hands and fingers. Children will paint their fired pieces by hand in colorful, nontoxic acrylic paints. As this is a short period, parents are welcome to sit in.

Parent Child Fun with Clay

Children ages 8 and up with a favorite adult share in the creation of many objects, such as wheel thrown vessels, animal sculptures, banks, trivets, wall pockets, beads, coil and pinch pots. You are only limited by your imagination. Techniques and proper clay handling taught in a structured yet creative environment.
