First there were fish. Then there were frogs. Now… Bike Racks?!
The Erie Art Museum is thrilled to announce the newest public art project to hit the streets of Erie. The Erie Art Museum is partnering with community organizations to install 40 artistic and functional artist-designed bike racks in Erie. The initial 40 will be installed in downtown Erie, with plans to expand the installation area soon after. These bike racks will range anywhere from object-shaped racks (google “artistic bike racks” for examples) to beautifully crafted abstract forms (like the bike rack outside the Art Museum). This public art project will not only serve the cycling community, but will also add color and interest to downtown Erie, build civic pride, and connect the arts with the community. Additionally, the project encourages bicycling, and addresses issues of transportation, recreation, health, well-being, and environmental awareness.
Partner with the Museum, the City of Erie, the Erie Downtown Partnership, Fortis Institute, Gannon University, the Y, Sustainability Coordinators from Mercyhurst and Behrend, and other community agencies along with bicycling enthusiasts and to bring this project to fruition!
Like the GoFish! and LeapFrog! projects, the designs will be original and non-commercial. This ensures that the project is about community rather than commerce (although both will benefit) and that your donation is tax deductible. Rest assured that the bike rack designs will conform to national standards for functionality and safety. Installation is scheduled for summer 2012!
