A lighthouse serves as a beacon of hope, with its powerful light meant to guide you through turbulent tides and lead you home. But what if you are already home? In Julia Ennis’ surrealist paintings, she explores what it feels like to be surrounded by tumultuous waters. Her paintings give a feeling of isolation but also comfort with her use of bright, vibrant colors radiating from the lonely depiction of homes. The warm light contrasts the cold water and draws the viewer in, providing comfort and connection. Julia’s process is meticulous, and after many layers of paint the finished piece unfolds revealing her fantastical landscapes.

Jamie Keim’s body of work examines relationships and patterns found while observing the natural world. Her process focuses on an organic, instinctually-driven painting method with little tangible plan. She connects negative space and color loosely based off of the four seasons and is directly inspired from Lake Erie’s highly intense or calming moods. Jamie frequently uses her bare hands and other found objects to exhibit movement and create ethereal landscapes.

While the artists have physical distance between them, they stay connected through their love for art and shared experiences studying art together in New York City at Pace University. Come Highwater explores Jamie and Julia’s friendship and the journey their art has taken them on. While their painting styles differ, they find a common theme in creating imaginary environments. Jess Royer will play music from 5:30-7:30 and light refreshments will be provided.
