Summoning the Wind: Qian Li

September 5th 2024

Main Gallery

As an interdisciplinary artist, Qian Li weaves together personal narratives with universal themes, bridging the gap between individual experiences and collective concerns. Drawing from her upbringing in a Chinese coastal village and her journey of raising a biracial family in the United States, Li is deeply intrigued by the delicate dance between opposing forces. Her creative vision often springs from the realm of dreams, infusing her narratives with a sense of mystery and fluidity across time.

The title, Summoning the Wind, refers to a Chinese metaphor, which suggests the ability to call upon natural forces. This invisible element is one of the central themes in her meditations on time, power, and protection. Li delves into the dichotomies of stasis and change, the private and the public, and the intersection of memory and lived experience. Through painting, print, video, and installations, this exhibition offers a multidimensional exploration of these themes, inviting viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of human existence.
