Don McCain Receives Outstanding Volunteer Philanthropist Award

Long time board member and development committee chair, Don McCain was selected as Outstanding Volunteer Philanthropist on November 15th at the Association of Fundraising Professionals National Philanthropy Day luncheon at Lake Shore Country Club.  Don was nominated by Christine Eddy, Director of Development.

As a child, art was obscure and almost unreachable to Art Museum board member, Don McCain. His family did not put a lot of value in art and the Erie did not have the artistic vitality it has today.  The primary resource for fine art was the very small Erie Art Club (the parent organization of the Erie Art Museum), which had a collection of less than 70 pieces.

Don believes making art accessible is important for the life of the community.  And, that art nourishes the soul. One value that Don’s dad instilled in his family was that if you are blessed to live in a community that supports you and gives you a good life, you need to give back.  Don makes annual contributions to his family foundation, the McCain Foundation, which in turn gives financial support to the Erie Art Museum and other worthwhile local charitable organizations.

Don played a pivotal role in the success of the Erie Art Museum for the past 12 years in many capacities.  He started as a board member in 2005, served as board president and has chaired the development committee for the past four years.

Don was instrumental in helping to secure funding during the “Picture a place” campaign in 2004 to build the new building.  A total of $8 million was raised. As a result of the campaign and the new building, the Erie Art Museum has become a significant regional museum, tourist destination, and cultural jewel of downtown.

It is through the volunteer leaders and philanthropists like Don that the Erie Art Museum is able to enrich the lives of countless members of the Erie community. Congratulations on your much-deserved award, Don!
